The Passing of a legend

National Update  
 
Greetings supporters and members! Because of a few 
pressing events this week, I decided to send this update.  
For our Mothers, I hope each and every one of you had an 
enjoyable Mother’s Day! 
 
The Passing of a legend: It is with the deepest regret 
that I notify the members that retired Sergeant Major James 
McCargo has passed. Sergeant Major was an original 
Montford Pointer and the second African American Marine 
(after Sergeant Major Huff) to wear Sergeant Major Stars.  
Notes of condolence may be sent to the Sergeant Major’s 
home at 2376 Kenwyn Street, Oceanside, CA 92054. Calls 
can be made to his family (daughters, Gina Ross and Solan 
Gilbert) at 760-757-6652. 
 
The wake will be Friday, 19 May 2006 from 6:00 -9:00 PM at 
the Friendly Church of God and Christ located at 1836 
Dixie, Oceanside, CA 92054. 
 
The funeral will be Saturday, 20 May at Martin Luther King 
Elementary Middle School located 1290 Ivy Ranch Road, 
Oceanside, CA 92057. The viewing will be from 9:00 – 10:45 
AM with the services starting at 11:00 AM. 
 
Promotion: On a brighter note, Colonel Ronald L. Bailey was 
frocked to Brigadier General by the Chairman of the Joint 
Chiefs of Staff, Marine General Peter Pace in ceremonies 
today at Henderson Hall. 
 
Post and Relief: Sergeant Major James R. Futrell will have 
his post and relief ceremony as the Sergeant Major of 
Marine Corps Recruiting Command on Friday, 19 May 2006 
beginning at 10:00 Am with Major General Gaskin’s remarks.  
The Sergeant Major will relinquish his post to Sergeant 
Major Fenton Reese. Congratulations to Sergeant Major 
Futrell on a very successful tour of duty. Both he and 
General Gaskin will be missed at the Recruiting Command! 
 
A note of thanks: This email note was received from Major 
General retired Charles Bolden upon his induction in the 
NASA Hall-of-Fame “Joe and All MPMA Members, Thank you very 
much for the kind words of congratulations on my recent 
induction into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.  This was quite 
an honor, as you might expect, and I was privileged to 
represent all of you in accepting this honor.  Semper Fi! 
Charlie B”.

absolute latest information. Please make your reservations 
early for hotel rooms and be mindful of the cut-off for the 
early bird special.
