present Mr. Walter Maddox, an original Montford Point

numerous friends.  Mr. Maddox was both surprised and
elated.

General Officer Happenings

Brigadier General Cornell Wilson was promoted to Major
General on 2 October at ceremonies aboard Camp Lejeune,
North Carolina by Lieutenant General James F. Amos.
General Wilson has been a staunch supporter of the
Association during the past five years. Immediately after
relinquishing his first command as a General Officer, he
attended our National Convention at Camp Lejeune and has
attended conventions in Atlanta, Detroit and this past
year’s convention in the DC area. The General has spoken
at many events including the Beaufort Chapter’s Awards
luncheon and the 2004 NAAP convention in Philadelphia. We
wish General Wilson continued success in his career!!!

Retired Major General Arnold Fields has taken a position
working for the Department of State. The General was sworn
in to the Department of State on 18 August 2004 and since 2
September he has been performing his duties as Chief of
Staff of the Iraq reconstruction and the administering of
18.4 Billion (with a “B”) dollars appropriated for this
effort. The General also works in support of the US
Ambassador to Iraq. General Fields was our guest of honor
at the 2000 convention at Camp Lejeune and has always
answered the call to support our efforts. We wish the
General a successful and SAFE tour of duty over in Iraq!!

Retired Major General Charles Bolden and MPMA Hall of Famer
recently had the Laurel Bay, South Carolina Intermediate
School named in his honor. General Bolden is a South
Carolina native and 34 year Marine who flew on four space
shuttle missions as a NASA astronaut. The General is
currently a Senior Vice President for Tech Trans based in
Houston Texas. Congratulations General on this great
honor!!

Brigadier General Walter Gaskin was recently installed as
the Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruiting Command in
Quantico Virginia. The General’s awesome responsibilities
will include the recruiting and training of the future
Marines for our Corps. The General will be considered for
his second star this year and we all are hoping the best
for him.

Convention Chicago 2005
The dates for our 40th Annual Convention are 13-17 July
2005 with the 13th and the 17th being travel days. Chicago
is hard at work to make our 40th Convention as memorable as
the DC Convention, which set the bar high!! We’ll see you
in Chi for 05!

Spring Council Dates
The National President has given two dates in April to the
Chicago Chapter for the Spring Council. Once finalized,
they will be sent to the masses. A reminder that Award
Recommendations are due in writing at the Spring Council.
Please refer to your by-laws for the awards available.
Reports from Regions and National Officers are also due
during Spring Council. It’s never too early to start on
these reports. Please bring enough copies for the
Executive Council.

We are still searching for a Chapter or Chapters to host
Convention 2006. If you are interested, please contact the
National President or myself as soon as possible.

I had the opportunity to sit in on the September monthly
meeting of the DC Chapter. As with most chapters, they are
busy with both short and long range plans for the
Association year which began on 1 September. Chapter
President William Wilbur manages to balance his extremely
busy personal life with his dedication to the Marines of
Montford Point. The efforts of all the chapters is not
going unnoticed. I sincerely believe the Association is on
the verge of Nationwide recognition and it’s due to the
hard work of each and everyone of you in the trenches doing
the grunt work to help Preserve the Legacy of the men we
represent. Please take time during the ball season to
rededicate yourselves, as I will, to continue to do this
most important work.

Please visit the following links for stories relevant to
the Association:

Finally, as we begin our chapter year I would be remised if
I did not encourage all to become current in their
membership and to get a current chapter list to our
National Recording Secretary, Regina Lawrence.

Please continue to do all that you do to Preserve the
Legacy of our heroes!

Semper Fidelis!
