Military Service:
Chief Warrant Officer Four Averhart was born on March 14, 1968 and is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He enlisted in the Marine Corps delayed entry program in January 1987 and shipped to recruit training in August 1987 at Parris Island, SC.
On January 19, 2007 Chief Warrant Officer Four Averhart assumed the duties as the Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Base Brig, and Company Commander, Brig Company Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, NC. He was promoted to his current rank on June 1, 2007.
Chief Warrant Officer Four Averhart’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), Navy Achievement Medal,(gold star in lieu of third award), Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (with three bronze stars), and the Marine Corps Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award). He has completed a successful tour as a Drill Instructor, and Airborne School.
Volunteer Service:
James Averhart, a Lifetime Member, has been an active member of the Montford Point Marines Association for 12 years. He is the only active duty Marine currently holding a National Officers billet. James has held the position of Chapter President for the Quantico Chapter # 32 of the Montford Point Marine Association and under his leadership the Quantico Chapter went from a re-start up Chapter in 2005 to the Association’s "Chapter of the Year" in 2007.
During this tenure, James was recommended to the National President to be appointed as the Regional Vice President for the Southern Region of the Montford Point Marine Association; the largest in terms of membership with 17 chapters in 14 states. James was subsequently elected into this position at the 2007 National Convention and in accordance with the National Bylaws, he also serves as the Senior Regional Vice President in the Association.
James planned and executed a meeting of his Region Presidents in March of 2008 which was the first significant meeting of this region in recent memory. He personally arranged for a new chapter at Cherry Point, NC. He was also involved in the revitalization of the Atlanta, and Albany Chapters. He is currently assisting in the institution of the newly formed Tampa Bay, Fl. Chapter. James planned and executed a telephonic conference for his Region Presidents in March of 2009 with several National officers attending the call. He has given his vision, intent and guidance and oversaw the operation of special events which included 2 Heritage Dinner and Socials, 2 Formal Birthday Balls, a Black and White Ball, a Regional Dinner, a Golf Tournament and a host of other fundraising events all honoring the Original Montford Point Marines.
James, currently holds the following positions in the Association: Vice Chair on the Board of Director for the Montford Point Marines National Museum, member of the Board of Directors for the Camp Lejeune Chapter # 10, and Historian for the Quantico Chapter # 32. On behalf of the Association, he has briefed and shown the documentary on 84 different occasions, and has spoken as a Guest of Honor on 12 occasions honoring The Montford Point Marines.
Community Service:
James is an active member in his Church, Community and several other organizations. He serves as the Assistant Chair of the Legal Re-dress committee with the Onslow County Branch, NAACP.
Education:
James has continued to pursue his educational goals while on active duty by receiving an Associate of Arts in General Studies, Associate of Arts in Theology, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor of Science in Theology and Biblical Studies, and currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Security Management, and a Masters of Divinity and Theology Degree.
